Tottenham coach, Ryan Mason has taken to Twitter to argue that central midfielders should be encouraged to ‘play forward and run forward’.
The former Spurs interim head coach was reacting to an old clip of him scoring against Sunderland in the Premier League for his boyhood club.
Mason played a one-two with Erik Lamela before continuing his burst forward into the box, eventually being played through by the Argentine and chipping it past the keeper.
Mason’s comments, rather conveniently, come just days after Tottenham fell to a 3-0 defeat against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. During this game, Spurs’ midfield trio really struggled to create and dictate the game.
In fact, The Times put together a pass map to show just how rarely Harry Winks played the ball forwards into attacking areas.
Perhaps Mason’s tweet was a slight hint towards Tottenham needing to play more adventurous and attacking football, especially in the centre of midfield.
My favourite goal ✅ We have to encourage CMs to play forward & run forward! Although I had to play through that knee injury for about a year 🤯 https://t.co/bsMnbvinnR

Spurs Web Opinion:
I am convinced this is a little comment on the current Spurs midfield from Mason. Tottenham played three very similar players in Winks, Skipp and Hojbjerg at the weekend. It was crying out for Ndombele or the absent Lo Celso to be more progressive.
