‘Said we were all overweight’ – Ledley King makes Conte comparison from his Spurs days

Ledley King believes Tottenham can build on the appointment of Antonio Conte and make a strong push to make the top four at the end of the season.

The former central defender also claimed that one of the Italian’s training methods is similar to what he experienced under a former Spurs manager.

Conte was drafted into Spurs after the club relieved Nuno Espirito Santo of his duties following an unconvincing run of form in the Premier League.

The Italian quickly implement his own methods around the club both on and off the pitch, as he becomes the latest manager tasked with altering Spurs’ fortunes.

In what has already been Conte’s first week at the helm, former Spurs defender and club ambassador King has given his view on the 52-year-old’s appointment and what he can push the club to achieve going forward.

Speaking on the Kelly & Wright Show, he said: “To have the opportunity to bring someone like [Antonio] Conte into your football club, the opportunity doesn’t come round often.

“I think the players are already enjoying working under him and we have to see what can be achieved this season.

“The top four is achievable seeing as Manchester United are struggling at the moment. West Ham are doing well but the club will still have to have a great season to do that but with someone like Conte in charge, they will be looking at that now.

“It’s going to be tough for him because he doesn’t have much time, he’s coming in a difficult period. He’ll be doing everything to get his point across as soon as possible.”

Conte and his backroom team are known for their intense training sessions and strict regimes, which is partly why the former Chelsea boss has been so successful wherever he has managed.

The Italian has also reportedly implemented wholesale changes to the players’ dietary plans after he was allegedly unimpressed with the conditions of some of the Spurs contingent.

That is something King is familiar with and can relate to, with Conte’s methods striking similarities to former Spurs manager Juande Ramos during his short stint at the club.

He added: “It [changes to players’ diet] happened with me and we brought in Juande Ramos at the time.

“He changed the diets of all the players, said we were all overweight. We’d seen Ramos’ work, we had seen him win things so we bought into that, so the same will be now with the players and Conte.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Conte looks to be shaking up the club completely, which is something that Spurs have needed after a period of stagnation and regression. Hopefully, his methods can change the club’s outlook going forward, as everything looks pretty positive from the outside.
