‘Say goodbye’ – Former PL manager expects star to leave in Spurs ‘reboot’

Alex McLeish believes Tanguy Ndombele will be one of the players that Tottenham move on as part of their rebuild under Antonio Conte.

Ndombele is yet to start a single Premier League game since Conte arrived at Spurs.

The Italian admitted last month that the 24-year-old needs to work harder than most other players because of the talent he possesses but the French international seemingly faces an uphill battle to break into the starting eleven.

It was recently reported that Conte has asked the Spurs hierarchy to cash in on Ndombele in January but this claim has been dismissed by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, who stated the Tottenham head coach is yet to evaluate the midfielder fully.

McLeish believes the North London club have persisted with the likes of Ndombele for long enough, questioning the midfielder’s lack of consistency.

He suggested the former Lyon man could be on his way out from Spurs when the transfer window reopens.

When asked about Ndombele’s future, the former Aston Villa boss told Football Insider: “You have to regroup as a squad at some point.

“For a pretty long time, there have been players who haven’t quite made the grade at Spurs, who haven’t been able to sustain themselves at the top level.

“The consistency is key. How many times have we said ‘he was great last week’ and then we don’t speak about him for 10 weeks as he isn’t playing.

“So I think there has to be a bit of a system reboot. That will mean some players have to leave and you say goodbye.”

Common sense suggests that at least one (possible two) out of Ndombele, Dele and Lo Celso will be moved on in January.

Even if Conte switches from a 3-4-3 to a 3-52 (which he has shown no indication of doing), there still is not enough room for all three players in the squad.
