Scott Munn confirms only one Spurs player will not travel to Australia for post-season friendly

Tottenham’s chief football officer Scott Munn has confirmed that the entire Spurs squad is expected to travel to Australia to take on Newcastle United at the end of the season, with Timo Werner being the only player who is likely to miss the trip.

It was reported by The Times earlier this week that Tottenham Hotspur will take on Newcastle at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in a post-season friendly after the end of the season.

The friendly will take place on May 22, just three days after Spurs end their Premier League campaign with a trip to Sheffield United.

That means that those who are involved in the European Championship would have to make a 20,000-mile roundtrip in order to quickly link up with their respective national teams ahead of the start of the tournament.

It has been reported by Football.London that this potentially gives Gareth Southgate a big headache since James Maddison as well as the Magpies duo Anthony Gordon and Kieran Tripper are expected to be called up to the Three Lions squad.

Timo Werner set to miss Australia friendly

However, Munn has now made it clear that the international calendar will not have any bearing on player availability for the fixture, revealing that Werner is the only one who might miss it since he is getting married.

The Australian told ESPN about the post-season friendly: “The international window doesn’t start until after the tour. All players will be available unless surgery or extenuating circumstances. I think there’s only one player [Werner] who’s getting married that weekend, so he probably won’t travel.”

Spurs Web Opinion

My suspicion is that Tottenham will be contractually obliged to pick their best players in the game, which is why I doubt Postecoglou will have the chance to rest his regular starters.
