Serge Aurier completes return to club football on initial season-long deal

La Liga outfit Villarreal have confirmed the signing of Serge Aurier on a free transfer.

The right-back has been without a club since he mutually agreed his contract with Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the summer transfer window with just a matter of hours to run until the window slammed shut.

Aurier’s status has an out of contract player has allowed him to move outside of the transfer window.

The Ivory Coast international has signed a season-long contract with the Yellow Submarine which includes the option to extend the agreement until June 2024.

After putting pen to paper at the Spanish side, the former Spurs player has headed off for international duty with the Ivory Coast ahead of their World Cup qualifying double header against Malawi and will be officially unveiled following his return to the club.

Aurier was a Marmite-type figure among the Tottenham Hotspur fanbase and was frequently guilty of a lapse of concentration with his decision making which ended up costing his side dearly one more than one occasion; last season’s home defeat to Leicester City where he gave away a penalty on the brink of half time certainly springs to mind.

The slower pace of the game in Spain could play into his advantage and will now battle former Spur, Juan Foyth for the starting berth in Unai Emery’ side.
