Serge Aurier’s first words after having his contract terminated at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the departure of Serge Aurier after coming to a mutual agreement over the termination of his contract.

The 28-year-old was within the last year of his contract and had not featured in the plans of Nuno Espirito Santo this season, after failing to be named in any of his match day squads.

BBC football journalist Simon Stone revealed on Twitter that the Ivory Coast international’s contract would have to be cancelled ahead of the 11 pm deadline in order for him to join a new club as an out-of-contract player before the January window.

Aurier told the official Spurs site: “I have really enjoyed my time at Spurs and would like to thank the Club and the fans, but I feel now is the right time for me to move onto a new challenge.”

Aurier was one of the characters in the changing room and was somewhat unpredictable with his defensive manner, having given away more than one questionable penalty. However, one standing memory was the bravery and determination he showed to take to the field at Newcastle United just a short while after his brother had been murdered in France.
