Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali has revealed that AS Roma showed interest in midfielder Davide Frattesi, who is reportedly on Tottenham’s radar.

Frattesi’s reputation has blossomed over the last 12 months, due to the midfielder’s consistent displays in the heart of Sassuolo’s midfield last season.

The Italy international was reported to be on the radar of Roma and West Ham United during the summer transfer window, with the player said to be valued at £26m, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

However, the midfielder stayed put at the Mapei Stadium and has made a bright start to the new season, having found the back of the net twice in seven Serie A matches so far (Transfermarkt).

Gazzetta dello Sport reported last week that Tottenham and Brighton had also entered the race for Frattesi’s signature.

The report suggsted that both Premier League clubs are watching the 23-year-old closely and are considering a January offer for the player.

Carnevali has now confirmed that Frattesi was of interest to former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, but he explained that the Giallorossi’s requests were rebuffed in the summer.

The Sassuolo chief told Calciomercato about the midfielder: “He was one of the players we had requests for, especially from Rome at the beginning of the market, but then nothing materialized and we did not want to sell it after selling Raspadori and Scamacca.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not expect Tottenham to sign a central midfielder in January as Conte has four reliable options at his disposal at the moment. I suspect we could see the club making a move for a versatile attacking midfielder in Malinovskyi’s mould, who can also feature out-wide.
