Serie A midfielder confused by transfer rumours amidst links with Tottenham

Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham this summer, has admitted that he wants to remain at the Serie A club.

Zielinski, who has been a consistent performer for Napoli over the years, fell down Luciano Spalletti’s pecking order over the second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

Alfredo Pedulla reported last month that the attacking midfielder would consider his future at the end of the season, with Antonio Conte said to be keen on bringing him to Spurs.

This was backed up by Il Mattino (23/05/22 – as relayed by Area Napoli), who suggested that both Conte and Fabio Paratici rate the Polish international highly, with the former previously trying in vain to take the midfielder to Inter Milan in 2019.

The report added, however, that Spurs were put off by Napoli’s €50m (£42.8m) asking price for the 28-year-old.

Zielinski has now dismissed the speculation linking him with a move away from the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

He told Sky Italia: “I don’t understand where these rumours come from, I don’t think my adventure at Napoli will end this summer. I have an important contract that will last another two years.

“In Naples, I feel good, even if somewhere I read the opposite. The desire to leave the club never came out of my mouth.

“Yes, I had a difficult period in the second half of the season but this does not jeopardise my stay in this team. I want to continue with Napoli because they are a great team.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Conte will want to sign a number eight this summer and it appears like Eriksen is Tottenham’s number one target. If a move for the Dane does not materialise, I expect the club to go after Juventus’ Weston McKennie rather than Zielinski.
