‘Shambles’ – O’Hara reveals why he thinks Mourinho continues to play defensive football

Jamie O’Hara did not mince his words when assessing Tottenham’s defensive display against Liverpool last night, labelling the home side’s defence a shambles.

All three of the goals that Liverpool scored came about due to individual errors at the back by Jose Mourinho’s men.

Liverpool took the lead right on the stroke of half-time as Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris failed to communicate and cut off a straight-forward pass as Roberto Firmino tapped the ball into an empty net.

Lloris was at fault again for the second goal at the start of the second half as the Frenchman parried a shot straight into the path of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had time to pick his spot.

Joe Rodon then attempted to control a cross-field pass and allowed Sadio Mane to nip in and slam home the third.

O’Hara insisted that one of the reasons Mourinho continues to play a defensive style of football is that he realises the back four needs protection since they always have a mistake in them.

Here’s what the former Spurs midfielder tweeted on social media after Tottenham’s 3-1 defeat to the Reds:

Spurs Web Opinion

There are plenty of fans who are being extremely critical of our display. However, I did not think our performance, particularly in the first-half, was much different from the ones against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal earlier in the season. We restricted Liverpool to a few chances before the interval but Mourinho cannot legislate for the kind of poor individual mistakes we made at the back.
