Shearer claims Harry Kane has to ask the Spurs hierarchy a key question now

Alan Shearer has claimed that Harry Kane would have no choice but to leave Tottenham this summer if Antonio Conte walks away from the club.

Kane will only have two years left to run on his contract with Spurs in the summer (Transfermarkt) and the speculation regarding the striker’s future has unsurprisingly resurfaced ahead of the transfer window.

The Athletic revealed this week that Manchester United are set to make a move for the Tottenham man irrespective of who replaces Ralf Rangnick as the club’s next head coach.

The report added that Jorge Mendes has already spoken to the likes of Tammy Abraham and Darwin Nunez over replacing Kane at Spurs.

Meanwhile, Conte’s future has also been the subject of speculation, with some reports indicating that the Italian could replace Mauricio Pochettino at the helm at Paris Saint-Germain (Daily Mail).

Shearer believes that Kane’s future will be tied to Conte’s and that the striker should only stick around at his boyhood club if the 52-year-old is backed this summer. He also urged Kane to ask the Spurs hierarchy about their summer ambitions as soon as possible.

The Newcastle legend said on BBC’s MOTD Top Ten podcast (28/03/22): “What if you mention recruitment but he has to go to the club, if not now, certainly within the next month or two. He’s got to find out what their ambitions are this summer.

“One, can they keep hold of Conte, because if they can it means they’re going to spend a few quid, as he’s not going to hang around I don’t think, unless they give him a right few quid.

“And if he gets the right answers then, yeah, he perhaps might stay. But if Conte is going to leave then he’s leaving for a reason, they’re not going to match his ambitions and Kane then has to leave, I think.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do expect Kane to give us one more year if we manage to sneak into the top four. However, I do not expect the striker to put pen to paper on a new contract.

So, that will leave Tottenham with a big decision to make on whether or not to cash in on the 28-year-old this summer and reinvest the money into the squad or risk losing him for a cut-price fee in 2023.
