Sheringham reveals only summer signing Spurs could have made to top Gareth Bale

Former Tottenham striker, Teddy Sheringham has claimed that Gareth Bale is the best signing Spurs could have made in the summer if they have ambitions of winning the title, short of bringing Lionel Messi to North London.

It is fair to say that Bale has not yet had the impact that some Tottenham fans would have hoped for when the club managed to bring him back to N17 on loan from Real Madrid.

The Welshman was always going to take time to get back his match fitness, having hardly kicked a ball over the last couple of years in the Spanish capital.

There have been some signs in the 31-year-old’s last three outings against Ludogorets, LASK and Royal Antwerp that he is slowly but surely getting back to his groove.

Even though Bale has not produced the kind of world-class moments we know he is capable of, Sheringham believes that just having someone of his experience is a major boost to the Tottenham dressing room.

The 31-year-old told Cards Chat (as relayed by The Express): “I said recently that Gareth Bale is probably as good a signing – apart from signing Lionel Messi, who’s like the best player in the world.

“For them to get Gareth Bale in the last window was just amazing for me. I know he hasn’t come in and done anything so exciting yet but just to have him there.

“Hopefully, he’s getting better and better fitness-wise and getting used to the Premier League again. To have him as backup is amazing.”
