Sherwood strangely claims Spurs January signing has not ‘set the world alight’

Tim Sherwood has claimed that Rodrigo Bentancur has not set the world alight since his move to Tottenham Hotspur in January.

Spurs snapped up both Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus on transfer deadline day. Understandably, it’s the Swede’s signing that has made the headlines as he has amassed nine goal contributions in just 11 Premier League outings so far (Transfermarkt).

However, Bentancur has quietly improved up the Spurs midfield and has formed a formidable partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle of the park.

The Uruguayan international has quickly made himself undroppable and his performances have meant the Lilywhites have not missed the injured Oliver Skipp much despite the England Under-21 international being the club’s most consistent performer in the first half of the campaign.

Sherwood has now claimed he has not been all that convinced by Bentancur’s displays but added that the midfielder has shown enough promise to suggest that he could be an important player for the club in the future.

The former Spurs interim boss told Premier League Productions (09/04/22): “Bentancur is getting better by every game as well. He’s not set the world alight, at the moment.

“But I can see that there is something there and he is going to be a very good player as well.”

The only way Sherwood can come to this conclusion is if he has not watched too many of Tottenham’s games recently. Bentancur has completely transformed our midfield and we now look a lot more composed in possession due to the Uruguayan’s presence.
