‘Should be embarrassed’ – Roy Keane blasts Spurs summer signing for defensive display

Roy Keane is not one to mince his words as a pundit and it looks as though Matt Doherty is the latest player to face the former Manchester United defender’s wrath, with Keane labelling the Spurs man’s defending against Wales on Sunday ’embarrassing’.

The Republic of Ireland faced off in a Nations League encounter against Wales in a game that saw Doherty come up against his Tottenham teammates Gareth Bale, Ben Davies and Joe Rodon.

It was the Welsh trio who had the last laugh as they overcame the Irish 1-0 courtesy of a David Brooks header in the 66th minute.

Bale picked up the assist for the goal as he rose above Doherty to head Dan James’ looping far-post cross across the face of goal for Brooks to guide it home. Keane felt that Doherty should have dealt with the initial cross far better than he did.

The pundit told ITV Sport (15/11/20 at 11:50 pm): “I am looking at Doherty now and he’s 28 years of age. Dan James does what he does, he gets beyond people.

“Kieffer Moore gave them a little bit more presence. Bale attacks it well. But you look at Doherty [trying to win the header against Bale at the far post], he spoke after the game against England and how it’s embarrassing, at the moment.

“Well, he should be embarrassed with his defending.”

The FAI have since confirmed that Doherty has tested positive for COVID-19, which has left some Spurs fans extremely worried since the likes of Bale, Davies and Rodon came in contact with the 28-year-old on Sunday.

Spurs Web Opinion

Having watched the goal plenty of times, one cannot really blame Doherty for failing to win the header. Bale has to be given credit for the way he won the ball against his Tottenham teammate as Doherty is certainly no slouch in the air. In fact, the majority of the players are going to lose out on a 50-50 header against Bale as he has a tremendous leap. This is yet again a case of Keane throwing around hyperbolic criticism for no reason.
