‘Showed his maturity’ – Tottenham youngster continues to impress on loan

Ashley Phillips continues to receive a lot of plaudits for his mature displays for Plymouth Argyle, with the centre-back being one of the Championship side’s star performers since his switch.

Phillips would have been disappointed not to get any game time at Tottenham during the first half of the season despite the injuries that the Lilywhites were dealing with in their backline.

The 18-year-old made a temporary move to Plymouth in January to get regular game time under his belt and he has shown at Home Park Stadium just why he is so highly thought of by many, putting in composed and dominating displays as part of the Championship club’s back three.

Postecoglou confirmed to Football.London last week that the club will look to strengthen at centre-back when the transfer window opens in June.

Ashley Phillips continues to impress at Plymouth

However, the Australian could perhaps be tempted to hand Phillips a first-team role instead if the teenager carries on in the same vein, with the on-loan Tottenham man being praised for his mature display despite the Pilgrims’ 1-0 loss at home to Preston on Saturday.

Plymouth Live handed the former Blackburn man a rating of 6/10 rating and wrote: “While Argyle’s attacking play was poor for the most part, defensively they were solid enough and limited Preston to just four shots on target, although another attempt from Layton Stewart hit a post late on.

“Eighteen-year-old Phillips again showed his maturity, winning most of his challenges and being composed enough to bring the ball out of defence at times.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given Postecoglou’s admission about wanting to sign another centre-back, it appears as if Tottenham’s plan is to perhaps loan out Phillips again next season. If he continues impressing at Plymouth, perhaps a loan move to a Premier League side could be on the cards for the teenager.
