Sky journalist says Spurs may not have given up on signing 23-year-old just yet

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge believes that Tottenham Hotspur could reignite their interest in Conor Gallagher during next summer’s transfer window.

Despite all the heavy speculation linking Gallagher with a move to Spurs ahead of the January window, in the end, the midfielder did not come particularly close to making a move across London.

In fact, Fabrizio Romano revealed a couple of weeks ago that the Lilywhites did not even open talks with the Blues regarding the England international during last month’s transfer window.

It was suggested subsequently suggested by Football Insider that Ange Postecoglou’s men simply priced out of a move for the 23-year-old, with Chelsea putting a huge £80m price tag on the player.

The situation might change next summer if Gallagher does not sign a new deal with his boyhood club over the coming months, with the midfielder set to enter the final year of his deal in June.

Tottenham may revisit a Gallagher deal in the summer

Bridge believes that the possibility of Spurs trying again for the player cannot be ruled out, explaining that Postecoglou is a big fan of the Chelsea academy graduate.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “It could very possibly be revisited in the summer if he doesn’t sign a new contract. I think that Conor Gallagher is someone Ange Postecoglou is a big fan of. He loves midfielders that are box-to-box, and I think he considers him to be in that category.

“Tottenham and Chelsea just don’t do transfer business, but there is a new regime with Todd Boehly and this is a player that Chelsea could sell for pure profit. We have seen that the profit and sustainability rules have teeth in the last few weeks, so Chelsea would have to consider offers.”

One would expect Chelsea to open talks with Gallagher over a new deal sooner rather than later as their new owners are strict about not allowing players to run into the final year of their deals.

However, should the 23-year-old fail to agree a new contract, one would certainly expect Tottenham to test the waters for the England star next summer.
