‘Snap their hands off’ – Bent urges Spurs to seize chance to sign defender

Former Tottenham striker Darrent Bent has urged the club to snap up Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti if he is available this month.

A report by Spanish outlet ElDesmarque claimed last week that Umtiti was surplus to requirements at Barcelona and that the Catalan giants are ready to sell him.

It was asserted that several Premier League clubs, including Spurs, are interested in landing the 26-year-old centre back. Arsenal and Manchester United are also said to be keen on a move for the former Lyon man.

The French international has featured just five times for the Catalan giants in La Liga this season due to injury problems (transfermarkt) and the report suggests that his time at the Camp Nou is now about to come to an end.

Bent insisted that Tottenham should do all they can do snap up the experienced centre back if he is indeed made available this window.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former England striker said, “If they can get Umtiti, wow. He’s big, strong, powerful and good on the ball, and he’s someone Mourinho can trust.

“He’s played in big games, won big competitions, obviously the World Cup which is a big one.

“If he’s been offered, that means he may not cost too much, so I’d snap their hand off.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Umtiti will easily walk into our back four at the moment given how poorly some of our defenders have performed this season. However, his injury record is a concern given how many walking wounded we already have in our squad. I don’t believe we are desperate for a central defender this month and think the club can reassess the centre back situation in the summer.
