Reguilon reveals conversation he had with Bale at Madrid before joining Spurs

Sergio Reguilon has opened up on the factors that convinced him to come to Tottenham Hotspur last summer ahead of the other clubs who wanted him.

The Spaniard had a terrific season on loan at Sevilla last campaign, playing an important part in the club’s Europa League triumph.

Spurs won the race for the defender’s signature, announcing his capture along with the much-awaited return of Gareth Bale.

The left-back’s signing was overshadowed to a degree by Bale’s fairytale return to North London but Reguilon has proven to be just as valuable a singing as the Welshman if not more for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Reguilon revealed that his former Real Madrid teammate was surprised to hear that he would be coming to North London with him.

The left-back told The Daily Mirror: “I was talking with him when we were with Madrid and said, ‘Gareth, maybe I go to Tottenham’.

“And he said, ‘Really? Me too! No way!’ In the end it was amazing.”

Reguilon has certainly proven the be a terrific acquisition for Tottenham, with the rumoured £28m fee the club paid for the 24-year-old now seeming like a bargain.

The Spurs star revealed that there was no shortage of clubs for him to choose from last summer.

He said: “In the summer, I had a big decision and with all the clubs on the table, I chose Tottenham.

“Because of their proposal, the team, the league, the club, the city… there are so many factors that said ‘yes’.

“Because of Gareth also and the personnel at the club, with Daniel Levy and with Jose Mourinho and everything – it was very important.”
