La Liga star admits ‘some clubs knocked’ for him in January amidst Spurs links

Yannick Carrasco has revealed he had no intention of leaving Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window despite Tottenham allegedly making their interest known.

Carrasco has cemented a spot in Diego Simeone’s side in his second stint with Atleti having rejoined the club from Chinese Super League club Dalian Professional in 2020.

Foot Mercato claimed Tottenham and Newcastle were interested in the Belgium international late on during the winter transfer window, with both sides willing to pay his reported £50 million release clause.

However, neither could secure a deal for the 28-year-old winger, who is now continuing to play through his Atletico contract which expires in the summer of 2024 (TransferMarkt).

Carrasco has since confirmed there was interest in his services in January, but he did not have any plans to leave the Wanda Metropolitano.

He told Belgian outlet RTBF: “Today I feel very, very good. I’m home. I am a major player [at Atletico Madrid].

“Some clubs knocked on my door this winter but I’m fine at Atletico. I wanted to continue my adventure here.”

Carrasco has made 33 appearances for Atletico this season, scoring three goals and setting up six, while he has turned out more than 200 times in total for the club (Transfermarkt).

Carrasco would have been such an excellent acquisition for Spurs if a deal did manage to materialise, but ultimately it wasn’t to be. It would have been tricky to complete anyway considering he has now come out and expressed his comfort with staying at Atletico.
