Speaking during the pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Wolves on Saturday, Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that Tottenham will activate the one-year extension on Toby Alderwereireld’s contract which will see the Belgian stay at the club till 2020.

However, as well publicised by the media already, the extension also activates a clause whereby Alderweireld can walk away from the club for a sum of £25m from next summer. This has some Man Utd fans hoping that they can finally snatch the Belgian center half from Spurs.

The Manchester club were linked with the 29-year-old throughout the summer transfer window but a deal didn’t materialise owing to disagreements over the fee.

Buoyed by the news that the release clause will soon come into play, some Utd fans are even hoping that they could do a deal this January as Spurs could lose out in terms of the transfer fee if they wait till the summer.

After contract negotiations between Belgian and the club broke down last season, Pochettino preferred to start with Davinson Sanchez with the 29-year-old being restricted to just 14 appearances in the league last season.

The defender, however, seems to be back in Pochettino’s good books this year as he has played nearly every game and has been a vital part of Spurs’ defence.

Tottenham fans will be hoping the club and the player can somehow come to an agreement on the contract terms as world class defenders like Alderweiereld are hard to come by.

  1. Amazing how quickly United have fallen. They bring in a manager simply to bring back the feel good factor. They cannot get a manager before the summer. Their fans are desperate to sign someone who will be well over 30 in the summer. Managers and players used to queue up to join them

  2. This is surely a crock of shit. Why would any player leaves spurs with the form they are in, the stadium coming up with the manager they have. Yes United are a big club, a famous club, but in my personal opinion fast falling into mediocre at this presemt OK moment
