Tottenham fans have been concerned about the prospect of losing three important players with Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen all into the final year of their contracts in North London.
There has been a positive update regarding one of those players this week with the Daily Mail reporting that Tottenham have begun discussions with the Belgian over a new contract but are said to be hesitant to offer him an extension of more than 12 months.
The centre half has admitted that he would like to extend his stay with the club and has insisted that he has at least another two good years of football left in him (The Guardian).
While some Spurs fans on social media were happy to hear the news that negotiations had begun with Vertonghen, many felt that the 32-year-old was deserving of at least a two-year extension given how important he has been to the club over the years.
Hear’s how some Spurs fans on social media reacted to the news:
2 years min, been great for us, always consistent and plays for the team not for individual recognition. Also he’s a CB and LB, can probably even play in the hold at DM.

Fantastic, loyal player with a solid fitness record that has never relied on pure pace. Only a penny pinching club would not offer 2 years with opt for third.

Give him 3 years just fucking do it

Give him 2-3 years, 12 months is a slap in the face

Give him a 2 year extension and then let him go. We need him another 2 years

12 months, if true, is a slap in the face of one of our best and most consistent players over the last 5 years.
If Sissoko, for all his improvements, has deserved a longer contract then so has Vertonghen.
Pochettino has talked about rebuilding, but Jan can still do a job.#COYS— David de Lane©Flying on a Windshield (@djsa2go) October 1, 2019
2 year deal would be good all round imo…

Imagine being Daniel and giving Sissoko, Davies and Lamela long term contracts, but then hesitate over Jan.

Just give him the bloody two years!

Spurs Web Opinion
It looks likely that the defender won’t receive more than a one-year extension considering that was what he got last year as well. However, may be the club’s decision to offer Sissoko a four-year deal represents a change in policy with respect to contract offers for players over 30. We at Spurs Web certainly believe he is deserving of a two-year extension.
