Over the past few days, the footballing world has been dominated by discussions over the future of Lionel Messi after reports emerged that the Argentine made his desire to leave Barcelona clear.
Reports indicate that the 33-year-old could be on his way to the Premier League this summer, with Manchester City said to be leading the race for his signature (ESPN).
A move to the likes of Paris Saint-Germain (AS) and Manchester United (beIN SPORT) have also been floated as a possibility for the Barca legend.
Reacting to the speculation surrounding Messi’s future, many Spurs fans on social media have joked that Daniel Levy could make a cheeky offer to bring the Barca star to North London.
Some quipped that two decades of penny-pinching by the Spurs chairman could have all been to save money for a sensational deal to sign Messi.
Here’s how some Spurs fans reacted to news that Messi could be available this summer:

Just checked Messi follows Lo Celso & Lamela on Instagram & not to get ahead of myself or anything but heard Levy has offered him a lucrative deal of a free Skywalk & 15% off at the club shop (sale items not included) to bring the second best Argentine in the world to Spurs.

If spurs signed messi he’d have to take the number 11 or something. Nobody takes 10 off H

Spurs will offer him £50k a week but the lure of the new stadium will surely entice Messi to come https://t.co/UC39nwnDOC

Spurs Web Opinion
It is good to see that despite years of frustration in the transfer market, Spurs fans still retain their sense of humour. Upon reading the reports linking Messi to a move to Manchester City, it is humbling to realise the fact that we are competing with clubs who can afford to completely blow us out of the water in terms of the transfer fees and wages they can pay, with or without COVID. That is why we will have to be very smart in the transfer market if we wish to close the gap with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.
Have something to tell us about this article?
I think it would be pointless us buying Messi anyway. Barcelona have been winning everything for the last 15 years. As soon as they let a couple of goals in, the Prima-donna launches his toys out the pram and wants to leave. How long would he be doing the same at Spurs? 1st half of the first game? OK maybe second.half.
