Tottenham Hotspur fans have enough to celebrate this week as they prepare for the club’s first ever Champions League final, but one player has given them extra reason to rejoice.
Toby Alderweireld enters the final year of his contract at the start of next season, meaning that he can currently leave on a free come the summer of 2020.
Spurs extended his contract by an extra season at the start of 2019, but this triggered a clause in the deal that could see him leave for just £25m this summer (Telegraph).
However, the Belgian has now come out to assure Tottenham fans that he intends to see out his contract with the club (Standard).
He said: “I’m going to say the same thing that I’ve been saying for the past couple of years. The only focus is Spurs, because of this focus I think I had a good season as well. I have one year left on my contract, so in my head, I will play for Spurs next season.”
This comes after the centre back has had another stellar season alongside Jan Vertonghen in the heart of the Spurs defence, a partnership Tottenham will not want to see the back of.
Spurs fans will now be hoping that the club are able to convince Alderweireld to extend his contract once more.
