Some Spurs fans react to Jan Vertonghen drawing Arsenal in the Europa League

Some Spurs fans on social media are confident that Jan Vertonghen will ensure that Arsenal are knocked out of the Europa League after Benfica were drawn against the Gunners in the round of 32.

Arsenal, like Tottenham, topped their group but Mikel Arteta’s side have been handed a much tougher draw on paper than their North London rivals.

While Tottenham face Wolfsberger AC, who are sitting in seventh place in the Austrian Bundesliga, Arsenal have been handed a daunting clash against the 37-time Portuguese Primeira Liga champions.

Vertonghen, who is a veteran of North London Derbies from his eight years at Tottenham, helped the Lilywhites to many wins over the old enemy and Spurs fans are now confident he knock the Gunners out of Europe with Benfica.

The central defender even ‘liked’ a tweet posted from Spurs Web’s handle that read: “Come on @JanVertonghen you know what you have to do when you return to North London.”

Some Spurs fans have called on the defender to pull out his trademark ‘Super Jan’ celebration after knocking Arsenal out of the competition.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given how much of a shambles Arsenal are at the moment, it is certainly not an exaggeration to say that Benfica go into the game as favourites. While a lot can change in a couple of months, it is difficult to see Arsenal can come out of their slump given the fixtures they have in the next few weeks. If Benfica do knock Arsenal out, I fully expect Jan to send out a ‘North London is ours’ tweet.
