Some Spurs fans will certainly feel for Gedson Fernandes due to the lack of opportunities that he has had at Spurs after Jose Mourinho revealed that he is open to ending the midfielder’s loan deal prematurely.
Fernandes joined Tottenham in January of this year on an 18-month loan deal from Benfica, with Tottenham having the option of making the deal permanent for £46m.
However, Mourinho admitted in an interview to Portuguese station SPORT TV (as translated by The Express) that the club are ready to send the 21-year-old back to Benfica if the Portuguese giants want to end his loan deal.
The midfielder has made only one appearance this season for the North Londoners and did not even make the club’s Europa League squad.
Some Spurs fans insisted that Fernandes deserved more opportunities to prove himself as he had shown glimpses of quality, while others were quite happy for the loan to be terminated as they were not convinced by the midfielder.
That’s the beauty of these loan deals, if it doesn’t work out let them go back. No hard feelings

Light weight for Premier .

The worst ever midfielder to play for Spurs. Hate him with a burning passion after he ruined the best chance of a trophy in years https://t.co/0mbjHefIWX

I feel sorry for him. Hasn't really had much of a chance.

Imagine:
Sell Winks, Gedson returns to Benfica.
Skippy returns to compete with PEH at DM, Buy Sabitzer.
Would be amazing business.— Rickles ?? (@burks_eric) November 11, 2020
Happy that Vinicius will get opportunities to prove himself and earn a permanent move. I just wish that Gedson was given that opportunity as well. Not at all convinced that he was given a fair shake or a run of games to get himself into a rhythm.

Spurs will let Gedson go back to benfica and he will end up being world class lmao

Gedson had a very good game apparently. Still think he will go on to have a very decent career. The option price around £40m was silly at £20m I might take a punt on him. Never really had a chance in his best position ??♂️ https://t.co/e9N0kwMWim

If I’m Benfica I’m recalling Gedson. There is no way for him to get into the squad. In the creative midfield you already have LoCelso Ndombele and Alli. Alli is not getting any time either. I would also try sell Rose at the next window and Paulo just to raise some cash

It’s a real shame tbh. Still ridiculously young. There’s definitely a top player there. Just a move at the wrong time. Spurs are in a position where players need to simply hit the ground running to get real minutes. Along with a stacked midfield as well which didn’t help https://t.co/aHX4caC4Al

Spurs Web Opinion
I do not think the club ever contemplated the possibility of paying the £46m to make the deal permanent. We were short of options in midfield last season, especially after the injury to Sissoko and Gedson was bought in as a temporary cover.
We have not seen enough of him in a Tottenham shirt to make a definitive judgement on whether he is good enough for this level. I would not be surprised to see him develop into a top player for Benfica if he gets a run of games to prove himself.
