It is not often that most Spurs fans on social media tend to agree with each other when it comes to transfer speculation but it looks as if that might be the case when it comes to the rumours linking Tottenham to Matt Doherty.
Spurs have understandably been linked with several right-backs this summer, with Serge Aurier reportedly set to follow Kyle Walker-Peters out of the club (Corriere della Sera via Sport Witness).
Names like Max Aarons (Athletic), Timothy Castagne (ESPN), and Zeki Celik (Le10sport) have been mentioned as targets for Tottenham over the past few months.
However, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold claimed on Tuesday that the club had turned their attentions to Wolves’ Doherty.
Gold claimed that Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the 28-year-old Wolves defender and believes he would be the perfect fit for Spurs’ system.
He suggested that the Lilywhites were hoping to snap up the Republic of Ireland international for around £12million this summer.
The reaction from some Spurs fans in social media seemed to be unanimously in favour of signing the 28-year-old, with many believing that Doherty would be a considerable upgrade over Aurier.
Played in a 5 for a long time which is the only concern.
Good player, imo quite a big upgrade on Aurier, certainly makes better decisions in attacking areas.
Does make sense and in reality, I think if we could do it, it would be an excellent signing.
(AMN deal helps matters).

I don’t care what anyone says, Højbjerg and Doherty both become instant starters for us and improve us a lot. For a combined fee of £20m it would be great business.

Signing Doherty and using Gedson Fernandes as the understudy might be it uno

Surely there’s nobody saying Doherty doesn’t improve Spurs?
Our defence and it’s shield were what let us down last season.
Hojbjerg & Doherty would go along way to improving that area.

With strong links now to Matt Doherty 28 coming to Spurs it’s clear he fits Mourinho current blue print. Strong physical type with lots of experience would certainly be an upgrade on Aurier. 31 career ⚽️ 44?️ Would be a much less erratic option at RB ?? pic.twitter.com/Loma4goxDS

If Spurs sign Matt Doherty and finally kicked Aurier out of the club, it would be the smartest piece of business we have done in a few years !
Doherty is 2nd only to Trent Alexander-Arnold in creating chances among Premier League right-backs over the past 2 seasons in all comps

If you said pick any RB in prem I would of said Doherty. We won’t pull out off no way

The way Spurs set up under Mourinho, signing someone like Doherty makes a lot of sense.
Our right-back virtually plays as a wing-back, and his goals / assist numbers at Wolves are very good.
No brainer. ✅ #THFC #COYS pic.twitter.com/vbZ2Wunpyf

Spurs Web Opinion
While some have pointed out that Doherty’s defending can leave a lot to be desired, I am not sure that will be as big an issue for us as it is for Wolves. Given the formation we play, Doherty will be asked to play almost as a winger with his only defensive responsibility likely to involve tracking the opposition full-back.
