Some Spurs fans split on midfielder’s performance on his full debut for the club

Some Spurs fans are divided over Gedson Fernandes’ performance in his first start for the club in the FA Cup fourth round game against Southampton on Saturday.

The 21-year-old, who joined Spurs from Benfica two weeks ago in an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy, started the game at the St Mary’s alongside Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso in central midfield.

Spurs dominated proceedings for the majority of the encounter and Fernandes didn’t do too much wrong in the first 45 minutes.

However, the midfielder failed to make a big impact on the game and was replaced by Erik Lamela just ten minutes into the second half.

Spurs improved noticeably after Lamela’s introduction, with the Argentine bagging the assist for Son Heung-Min’s opener.

Tottenham had to settle for a 1-1 draw, courtesy of the home side’s late equaliser, and some Spurs fans felt Fernandes didn’t do enough in the match.

Meanwhile, others insisted that the former Benfica man showed some good signs and will be an asset to the squad once he gets used to the Premier League.

I did feel Fernandes was largely anonymous during the game but that some rustiness is to be expected in his first few matches. However, it is clear that the youngster is technically proficient and can handle the ball in tight spaces. Hopefully, he will go on to show what he can do in the coming months once he gets used to the pace of the English game.
