Some Spurs fans are divided over Gedson Fernandes’ performance in his first start for the club in the FA Cup fourth round game against Southampton on Saturday.
The 21-year-old, who joined Spurs from Benfica two weeks ago in an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy, started the game at the St Mary’s alongside Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso in central midfield.
Spurs dominated proceedings for the majority of the encounter and Fernandes didn’t do too much wrong in the first 45 minutes.
However, the midfielder failed to make a big impact on the game and was replaced by Erik Lamela just ten minutes into the second half.
Spurs improved noticeably after Lamela’s introduction, with the Argentine bagging the assist for Son Heung-Min’s opener.
Tottenham had to settle for a 1-1 draw, courtesy of the home side’s late equaliser, and some Spurs fans felt Fernandes didn’t do enough in the match.
Meanwhile, others insisted that the former Benfica man showed some good signs and will be an asset to the squad once he gets used to the Premier League.
Didn't have much impact, hope to see his full potential soon 💪

Didn't get involved enough. Feel like he was a passenger, but he still showed good energy and ran a lot. It will take time for him to get into the system and the team, but today was not too great

Gedson Fernandes looks like a brilliant signing already. A proper scouting plan executed perfectly by levy

Gedson Fernandes obviously needs time to get use to the league but worried that he doesn’t seem to know how to get involved in play, will take time to get use to the English league #THFC

Trying to see what the point of signing Gedson Fernandes is

Can someone please tell Tim Sherwood that you can't judge Gedson Fernandes after his first start as he needs to adapt to the League and settle in the country as he is coming from a different League#COYS #THFC

Very few positives aside from the clean sheet and Gazza pen save today but one was that we actually saw Gedson. Under Poch we wouldn’t have seen him for months. Like that JM threw him straight in. pic.twitter.com/ph6rbV6PiN

-If we had a striker, there wouldn’t be a replay. Simple as, LEVY INVEST
-If Lo Celso keeps this up, he will be our Player of the Season. WORLD CLASS⚪️🔵
-Tanganga was solid, Sonny did well
-Toby was poor, Gedson struggled
-No idea why Parrott didn’t make the squad

Gedson hasn't done anything wrong, but today's performance suggests that he is surely not fit enough to play against City's midfield.
Hopefully Ndombele not getting any minute is because of that, rather than Mourinho punishing him for being injured

Spurs Web Opinion
I did feel Fernandes was largely anonymous during the game but that some rustiness is to be expected in his first few matches. However, it is clear that the youngster is technically proficient and can handle the ball in tight spaces. Hopefully, he will go on to show what he can do in the coming months once he gets used to the pace of the English game.
