‘Something extra’ – Spurs-supporting pundit wanted club to sign 33-year-old

Darren Ambrose has admitted he would have liked to have seen his beloved Tottenham Hotspur snap up Troy Deeney this summer.

Deeney ended his 11-year association with Watford at the end of the season when he completed a move to his boyhood club, Birmingham City.

The striker, who has proven a handful for Premier League defences over the years, has shown signs of decline over the past couple of seasons, increasingly restricted to a bit-part role at Vicarage Road.

At 33 years of age, it now seems as though Deeney’s time in the top flight might be over after returning to his hometown.

However, Ambrose admitted he was surprised that the experienced striker was let go by Xisco’s side over the summer, insisting he would have still been an asset in the Premier League.

The pundit claimed that Deeney would have been happy to serve as a backup to Harry Kane at Spurs and would have given the Lilywhites a useful Plan B.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder told talkSPORT: “I was surprised when Watford let him (Deeney) go. I feel he can (do it in the Premier League).

“I am going to say, I would have had him at Tottenham, for sure. I say this because Harry Kane has stayed now and he is always going to play.

“To get someone in, as a centre-forward, they need to know that they need to be a back-up striker. I think he would have happily done that.

“I think he gives you something extra. If you look at when Spurs played Watford, he could have caused problems like he always does.”

I can see why Ambrose feels the way he does, given that Tottenham have failed to replace Carlos Vinicius. While Deeney would certainly have been a useful backup to Kane a couple of years ago, I am not sure he is at the required level for us at the moment.
