‘Something special’ – Heung-min Son explains why he returned to Spurs so fast after Asian Cup

Heung-min Son saw his South Korea side crash out of the Asian Cup last Tuesday, but that didn’t stop him from getting back to club duty with Tottenham at the weekend. Now, the Spurs skipper has explained why he was so eager to play against Brighton.

Tottenham had been unable to call upon their captain throughout all of January and the first week of February, but Heung-min Son returned to the Spurs bench on Saturday afternoon for the Premier League clash with Brighton.

With 30 minutes to go and the scores level at one apiece, Ange Postecoglou brought Son onto the field. As the game entered its final moments, Spurs snatched an injury-time win thanks to a Brennan Johnson goal, via a Son assist.

After the game, Postecoglou praised Son’s impact from the bench and celebrated his ‘world-class’ attributes as the Lilywhites took all three points to move back into the top four (BBC Sport).

Son needs to play to erase Asian Cup pain

Now, speaking to The Standard, Son has revealed why he wanted to return so quickly and explained how much he enjoys playing for Spurs right now.

He said: “It is not nice talking about the tournament again. It is really tough to take, but it is part of football. It really hurts, but to heal is playing football again to make me smile again — like Saturday. Obviously, I came back really fast to help the team. I want to be part of the team. We had a great result.

“I just want to help the team as much as I can and I want to enjoy playing for the manager, playing with my teammates and we will see at the end of the season. There’s only a few months left until the end of the season but we don’t want to talk about the future already.

“As I always said, I want to give the best that I can, as a team that we can, we will see where it takes us. We can’t promise but we will do our best to make it something special.”
