‘Something tells me’ – Paul Merson makes prediction about Kane’s Spurs future

In his weekly column for Sportskeeda where he predicts the results of the weekend’s Premier League fixtures, Paul Merson has said that he expects Harry Kane to still be at Tottenham next season.

Tottenham return to Premier League action against Newcastle United on Sunday in a game that Antonio Conte’s men will see as a must-win as they aim to put pressure on Arsenal in the race for Champions League qualification.

Newcastle have been a much-improved side under Eddie How but the Magpies come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the back of two consecutive losses to Chelsea and Everton.

Merson believes that Spurs will not have things their own way on Sunday but backed Kane to put Newcastle to the sword.

He wrote: “If Harry Kane turns up, Tottenham will win this game of football.

“I was very surprised by Newcastle’s performance against Chelsea and felt there was no chance they’d lose to Everton, but that was exactly what happened despite Everton going down to 10 men!

“This is a very difficult game for Tottenham as I’ve been really impressed with Newcastle under Eddie Howe, but the home side should win this one.”

Merson also went on to discuss Kane’s future, amid reports linking the Tottenham striker with a move to Manchester United in the summer (The Athletic).

The former Arsenal midfielder suggested that the England captain might have made up his mind already about his future and backed him to remain at Spurs for at least another season.

Merson added in his column: “Kane’s future has once again come under the limelight and it’ll be up to him this summer.

“Manchester City are reportedly in for Erling Haaland so they may not come back in for him, so could it probably be Manchester United? If they get Kane and Declan Rice, I think they can challenge next season under a good manager.

“Will he look to move on in search of trophies or stay at Tottenham to break Alan Shearer’s goalscoring record? Something tells me he might stay – his mind is probably made up already!”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think there is any chance of Kane joining Manchester United, particularly given that Spurs look likely to finish above the Red Devils this season.

I still think Manchester City are the biggest threat to Tottenham’s hopes of hanging on to the 28-year-old and I would not be surprised if Guardiola’s men reignite their interest in the striker.
