Son refuses to make excuses for form, insists Spurs fans are right to expect more from him

Son Heung-min has admitted that he has been disappointed with his performance levels this season and remarked that Tottenham fans are right to expect more from him.

While many have put Spurs’ struggles over the last few months down to their defensive woes, Son’s lean patch in front of goal has certainly not helped Antonio Conte’s men.

The South Korean, who won the Premier League Golden Boot last season, has found the back of the net just four times in the league this season, leaving his strike partner, Harry Kane, with the bulk of the goalscoring responsibility.

The 30-year-old’s campaign was interrupted by a fractured cheekbone a couple of months ago but he refused to use that as an excuse for his form.

When asked if the injury affected him, Son told The Daily Mail: “I am not blaming that. I am just really frustrated. If I wasn’t then I would be crazy. I am really honest about this. I have a chance to help the team but can’t seem to do it like last season.

“It is difficult. I am always watching my games back and trying to improve and see what I can do better. I have had some unbelievable previous years that I won’t forget but sometimes bad times make you stronger and I am just trying to speak positively now.

“I know the fans want more from me. So do I. I agree with them 100 per cent when they criticise and I feel sorry to the team and the fans and the club. The expectation has been high because I have done well for so many years. I have to do that again.”

The forward also remarked that he and his Tottenham teammates are desperate to turn the results around, particularly with Conte now going through a tough time as he continues to recover from the surgery to remove his gallbladder.

When asked about the challenge of not having Conte at Hotspur Way, Son responded: “We have to believe and we have done it before. I prefer to speak from a better position but, look, the manager has been having a tough time in his private life and we need to give him something back.

“I feel really sorry because he has given everything to me and I want to give him back everything he can possibly receive. I always want to give him my best. We have a good squad and we need to stick together in this tough time and show unity. That’s the most important thing.”

The one thing Son can never be accused of is not trying hard enough or caring enough. In fact, if anything the forward has the opposite problem as his poor form seems to be playing on his mind and he is sometimes almost trying too hard and thus sometimes snatching at finishes that he would strike cleanly in the past.
