Souness tips England international to leave Spurs if he fails to break into the team

Graeme Souness has suggested that Dele Alli may demand to leave Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season if he does not play regularly under Jose Mourinho.

Alli was arguably Tottenham’s most improved player in the first few weeks after Mourinho arrived in North London, with the midfielder showing signs of returning to his old self.

However, the 24-year-old’s form suffered after the injuries to Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, as he struggled to get into matches without a focal point in attack to play off.

The England international was suspended for Tottenham’s first game back after the restart against Manchester United but took his place in the starting eleven in the 2-0 win over West Ham.

Alli once again dropped to the bench for Spurs’ clash against Sheffield United, with Mourinho opting to go with the pace of Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura, and Son Heung-min behind Harry Kane.

The midfielder did come on in the second half but failed to have much of an impact on the game.

Souness believes that the former MK Dons man will not be content on being a squad player under Mourinho.

Speaking to Sky Sports (as relayed by The Express), the former Liverpool midfielder said: “Did Mourinho not say something about it’s not Dele Alli and it’s his brother that has been playing?

“I don’t think he’s entirely happy with him. I think it’s a big decision he’s got to make going forward.

“Yeah [it may be rotation] but if you’re Dele Alli you’re not going to hang around if you’re not first choice.

“I don’t think he will be happy just being a squad member.”

Souness is clearly jumping the gun here given that Dele has only been benched for one game. Besides, one can argue that he did not deserve to start against Sheffield United on the back of his performance against West Ham. It is clear from the way Jose talks about Dele that he rates the midfielder highly. I expect him to be back in the starting eleven for our game against Everton.
