South African political party claims Spurs sponsorship deal has not been cancelled

South Africa’s official opposition party, Democratic Alliance, have revealed on their official website that SA Tourism have not cancelled their sponsorship agreement with Tottenham despite the outcry against the deal.

Tottenham were thought to have agreed a £42.5m deal with the SA Tourism board at the start of February, which would have been the most lucrative sleeve sponsor deal in Premier League history (The Times).

However, the proposal came in for plenty of criticism from opposition parties in South Africa once it became public (The Sunday Times).

SA Tourism board members, Enver Duminy, Ravi Nadasen and Rosemary Anderson, were even reported to have resigned with immediate effect due to their opposition to the proposed deal, and it emerged a few weeks later that the deal was set to collapse (BBC News).

However, the Democratic Alliance have now claimed the agreement has still not been cancelled and demanded to know why that is the case.

They suggested that the money should be used to fix the many dilapidated and unmaintained tourism sites instead and called for a parliamentary enquiry into the matter.

Even if the agreement had not been voided by SA Tourism, it might make sense for Tottenham to step away from it.

Given the political minefield that the issue has become in South Africa, it might have negative PR implications for the club.
