Southampton boss reveals whether he expects offers for Spurs-linked star

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has spoken openly about the future of his defender Janik Vestergaard, stating he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if offers came in for him this transfer window.

The Danish defender has reportedly attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur after an impressive 2020/2021 campaign. The Times claimed on July 5 that Spurs want to sign the Danish international.

Vestergaard, 28, is entering the final year of his contract as his current deal is set to expire in 2022.

This means that Southampton would have to convince him to sign a new deal or sell up this summer or in the January Window to recoup a fee. Otherwise, he could leave on a free transfer next summer.

The 28-year old has made 79 appearances in all competitions for the Saints since signing for the club in 2018 from Borussia Monchengladbach.

He also had a strong Euro 2020 campaign, playing 486 minutes in Denmark’s fantastic run where they reached the semi-final (Transfermarkt).

Hasenhuttl has spoken very openly about Vestergaard future on BBC Radio Solent (as quoted by Tribal Football):

“He has one year left on his contract, I plan with him next season, definitely. We need everybody here. He played a very good Euros.

“It wouldn’t be surprising if there were offers coming. But I plan with him next season.”

Vestergaard feels like a sensible signing especially given his contract situation. He has proven his worth for the Saints. Signing the Danish centre-back would be satisfying alongside another defender like Romero, but not by itself.
