Sporting director reveals Spurs showed interest in now-Liverpool star in 2020

Almeria sporting director Joao Goncalves has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur showed interest in signing Darwin Nunez back in 2020.

Nunez will lead the line for Liverpool next season after Jurgen Klopp’s men smashed their transfer record to sign the forward for a reported fee of £85m (BBC Sport).

The Uruguayan is coming to the Premier League on the back of a prolific season for Benfica, for whom he found the back of the net 34 times across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Before the Red swooped for the 22-year-old, it was reported that Tottenham were one of the clubs on his trail this summer (Football.London’s Alasdair Gold).

According to Football Transfers, Spurs even spoke to the striker’s agent about the possibility of moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It turns out that this was not the first time the North London club showed interest in Nunez, with Goncalves revealing that Spurs were one of the clubs who wanted to snap up the centre-forward from Almeria two years ago.

The La Liga club’s sporting director told the print edition of Record (14/06/22 as relayed by Sport Witness): “When we sold him (Nunez), there were other clubs that had referenced him like Brighton, Tottenham, Inter and Barcelona.

“Together we chose Benfica. He believed it would be best for personal development.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is understandable why Nunez might have wanted to join Benfica back in 2020 rather than coming to Spurs and playing second fiddle to Harry Kane. His development since then has vindicated his decision to reject the likes of us and Barca in favour of a move to the Portuguese club.
