Tottenham want Morten Hjulmand and Sporting are willing to relax their demands

Sporting Lisbon are willing to soften their stance on Morten Hjulmand as Tottenham and another Premier League club express an interest in the player ahead of the summer transfer window.

Tottenham strengthened in defence, in goal and upfront during the January window with the additions of Kevin Danso, Antonin Kinsky, and Mathys Tel respectively.

The one area Spurs neglected was the middle of the park, which is undoubtedly in need of reinforcements in the summer. Yves Bissouma has struggled this season while Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Sarr have not delivered the kind of consistent performances one would expect.

It has now been revealed that Tottenham may turn to Portugal to sign a number six, whose reputation has blossomed over the last 18 months.

Tottenham are interested in Morten Hjulmand

According to Jornal de Notícias (as relayed by Sport Witness) Sporting’s Morten Hjulmand is one of the names on Tottenham’s wishlist ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report reveals that Ange Postecoglou‘s men have been joined in the transfer race for the 25-year-old by Man Utd, with Ruben Amorim keen to reunite with the Dane at Old Trafford.

It is claimed that Sporting are aware that it would be ‘difficult to retain’ Hjulmand beyond this season and are thus ready to listen to offers for the player.

Although the defensive midfielder’s release clause stands at €80m (£66.3m), it is revealed that ‘there is room to negotiate’ as the Portuguese club are willing to accept a lower fee.

Will Spurs push ahead with a move for Hjulmand?

There is no doubt that Spurs will prioritise additions in the middle of the park in the summer, with Bissouma potentially being on his way out in the summer.

However, one thing that Tottenham would have to consider before spending big on a number six is how that will affect the development of Archie Gray.

Given how the 18-year-old has passed every test with flying colours this season, we might see Ange Postecoglou give the teenager a chance to show what he can do in the base of the Spurs midfield, which many consider to be his best position.
