Spurs’ 99-year-old FA Cup record remains intact thanks to Sheffield and Norwich

Tottenham’s 99-year-old FA Cup record remains intact following the elimination of Sheffield United and Norwich City from the quarter-finals over the weekend.

Spurs are still the only club to have won the FA Cup in the same season in which they were promoted to the top division of English football (Football.London).

Sheffield United were knocked out by a late winner from Arsenal at Brammal Lane and Norwich City to another late goal from Manchester United (FA).

While it was misery for these newly-promoted sides, for Spurs it meant that their 99-year-old record remained intact.

Spurs missed out on joining the top division of English football when football resumed in 1919 after the end of the First World War, however, it’s what they achieved in the following season that turned out to be record-worthy.

Following Tottenham’s promotion, the club lifted the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge after beating Wolves 1-0 in the final – making them the only side to win the infamous trophy in their first season following promotion.

However, the last time Spurs lifted the FA Cup was in 1991 when the likes of Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker played in the Lilywhite shirt.

It is a pretty meaningless record to many. However, looking forward, let’s hope we are not left waiting too much longer for the next piece of silverware. The FA Cup would be very much welcomed!
