Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed that Dilan Markanday has sustained a severe injury on his debut for the club just days after joining from Tottenham.

Markanday left Spurs to link up with the Championship side on Tuesday, with the move representing the winger’s first real opportunity to break into senior football.

The 20-year-old was named in the travelling squad to face Hull just a day later in a fixture that could have seen Blackburn move into the automatic promotion places.

Markanday made his Rovers debut in what was a 2-0 defeat at the MKM Stadium coming on as a substitute on 68 minutes, but it looks set to be his only senior appearance for a while.

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, the Spurs academy graduate picked up a hamstring injury in the encounter which requires surgery and will rule him out for the rest of the season.

Rovers boss Mowbray confirmed Markanday’s issue and stated the youngster suffered a ‘pretty severe’ problem that will sideline him for a ‘considerable amount of time’.

Mowbray told the club’s official website: “The disappointing news is that Dilan picked up a hamstring injury in the 20 minutes he was on the pitch at Hull.

“It looks a pretty severe one and, without putting a timescale on it, he has a pretty bad hamstring injury that will keep him out for more than a couple of weeks. It’s a huge blow for both Dilan and us.

“It’s really hard, especially considering this is the first move away from his family and the club he’d been at since he was nine. To make that move and then to find out you’ll be out of action for a considerable amount of time, it’s so disappointing.”

This couldn’t have gone worse for Markanday and it is so devastating for a player that simply wants to play senior football.

Long-term injuries are never good at the best of times and him suffering one as soon as he made what is a big move away from London will be tough. Hopefully, this doesn’t derail his development or knock his confidence in the long run.
