Tottenham Hotspur have announced our first signing of the January transfer window with the capture of Zeki Fryers from Standard Liege.
Fryers who can operate as a left-back or centre-back was tipped to move to White Hart Lane in the summer from Manchester United but United could have asked for up to £6million in compensation as he was under the age of 23.
Instead Fryers joined the Belgian side on a two-year deal and made seven appearances in his short stint on the continent. Interestingly, Spurs revealed in their press release that Fryers would be a joining as part of the Tottenham development squad. No fee has been disclosed, but reports have it at around £2-3million.
A statement on the official Spurs site read: “We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Standard Liege for the signing of Zeki Fryers.
“The young defender, capped by England at Under-16, 17 and 19 level, began his career at Manchester United before joining Standard Liege last summer.
“Zeki will link up with the Club’s Development Squad.”
