Spurs approached Premier League rival to off-load first team duo

An incredible twist to the transfer tale of Toby Alderweireld this morning, as reports now suggest that Manchester United made no attempt to sign the centre-back during the transfer window.

The only contact between the two clubs was a single phone call, when Daniel Levy rang to offer Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose to the Red Devils.

It is also said that Levy wanted to enquire over the services of both Anthony Martial, a long term target, and Juan Mata.

It is unclear whether the four deals were individual, or seen as a collective agreement.

The Mirror reports that a Tottenham source stated: “There was never any interest from United in either Alderweireld or Rose. So it wasn’t a case of us refusing to sell either player to them — they never spoke to us.”

Manchester United had been linked to Alderweireld for the entire summer, since enquiring over his services way back in May.

However, now it is reported that Harry Maguire was their main centre-back target during the transfer window.

With regards to Danny Rose, although United were interested a season ago, Mourinho has now apparently been told to push 23-year-old Luka Shaw, to get the best out of the promising youngster.

United are said to have quote unrealistic money for Anthony Martial, while rebuffing Tottenham’s approaches for both the Frenchman and Juan Mata.
