Spurs are exploring other options in case they can’t get top target – Journalist reports

CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has said that Tottenham Hotspur have a decision to make on whether to pay big money for James Maddison or pursue someone else instead.

It was reported by The Telegraph on Thursday that Ange Postecoglou had identified Maddison as his ‘priority target’ just a couple of days after being confirmed as Spurs’ next head coach.

The report claimed that, after being given the green light by the Australian, the North London club are now ready to push ahead with an opening offer for the England international.

Spurs looking for Maddison alternative

However, it was explained that while Leicester are resigned to losing Maddison following their relegation to the Championship, the Foxes are adamant that they want over £50m for the player even despite the fact he has just one year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium.

Jacobs has now revealed that Tottenham need to consider how spending such an amount on the 26-year-old would impact the rest of their summer transfer plans.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Spurs need to figure out if James Maddison could fit into their transfer budget for this summer.

“They are already exploring a few other options in the squad, but Maddison would potentially be the most expensive of the lot.

“The position he plays is a bit more of a luxury compared to the goalkeeper and centre-back decisions they have to make, too.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Leicester have a history of sticking to their guns. So, I suspect they are not going to budge on their asking price for Maddison.

Even though the 26-year-old has just one year left on his contract, the Foxes will be hopeful of getting a bidding war going for the midfielder and push his price up to the £50m mark.
