‘Spurs are not a foolish club’ – Finance expert impressed with Spurs’ digital expansion

Despite the uncertain times that face many at the moment, it must be said that Spurs are doing a tremendous job of engaging with their fans online.

With only 2000 fans being allowed into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for victories over Arsenal and Antwerp in November, a huge proportion of the Spurs faithful has not seen their team live since March of last year.

But over the past month, Tottenham have been incredibly active on broadcast platform Twitch, a streaming service used by many, attracting around 15million users every day.

The Lilywhites have used the channel for watch along’s, pre and post-match discussions as well as other forms of entertainment.

It is a great way of engaging with fans around the world. As things stand, the North London club have attracted over 10,000 followers to the channel.

A deal with Twitch is not the first bit of commercial business that has been made by the club. It was announced last week that online car retailer Cinch has become first brand to take up shirt-sleeve sponsorship (Tottenham Hotspur).

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes that Tottenham’s decision to embrace the platform is another way to increase brand awareness in the digital age.

He told Football Insider: “These are low entry costs as far as the club is concerned. It’s all about increasing profile,”

“It’s also about demographics. I’m far too old for Twitch but there are generations for whom that is how they consume day-to-day entertainment. Twitch and Tik Tok and things of this nature are the right avenues to pursue because you’re building the club’s profile.

“Because of the nature of these organisations, the club gets hold of valuable data as well. So if Twitch is proving very popular in South Korea, there is also the relationship with Son Heung-Min, then they will look at it and think there are other things they can do via Twitch. They can advertise products, offer discounts and use it as a marketing tool.

“It would be foolish of Spurs to do anything else and Spurs are not a foolish club. They are a very, very switched on club.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

It is fantastic to see Spurs doing more to attract a greater interest in the club. Such deals could be valuable to the club, especially given the current surroundings that the global pandemic has everyone in.
