Spurs confirm appointment of new performance director

Tottenham Hotspur have officially confirmed the appointment of Grètar Steinsson as the club’s new Performance Director.

Steinsson, a former Iceland international who played Bolton during his playing career, has previously most recently worked at Everton as their head of recruitment prior to leaving Goodison Park in December.

The 40-year-old is set to work closely with managing director of football, Fabio Paratici who had been seeking to bring in a fresh face following the departure of Steve Hitchen in February.

The Athletic reported earlier this month that Steinsson has a reputation of being a straight-talking, no-nonsense operator with agents appreciating his direct approach when it comes to negotiations.

He is expected to be involved in such areas as scouting, recruitment and sports science with the first team and academy sides.

Fabio Paratici has continued to overhaul the footballing side of the club following his appointment and the arrival of Steinsson will certainly help him to share some of his workload, allowing the Italian to focus on more important matters.

Simon Davies is also joining the club with a focus on the academy where he will take on the role of head of coaching methodology.
