Tottenham Hotspur have clarified that Sebastien Bassong will be available to face Liverpool on Sunday.

There was confusion among Spurs fans that the recent signing from Newcastle could still be serving a two-match suspension following his dismissal against Hull last season.

A statement on the official Spurs site read: “However, given he served the first game of his ban against Aston Villa on the final day of the previous campaign as a Newcastle United player, it meant the suspension continued to apply to Newcastle United games and was therefore satisfied when his former club visited West Bromwich Albion on the opening day of the Championship season on Saturday.”

We hope that now clears the situation up!

  1. are they sure, that was not my understanding, great news if correct will need to get clarification on premier leagues suspended list.

  2. Not relief until Premier League officials confirm it- look at WHFC. Though Levy is thorough you never no these days! Where’s Premeier League statement?

  3. according to fa list it is until club had played 2 games the club listed is Newcastle and that has now been done well played the management

  4. How can this be right, IF he technically played on Saturday for Newcastle his registration cannot have been completed, which would automatically mean he cannot be registered until Monday (Today) as the FA registrations department do not work weekends so he could not have played yesterday, which he clearly did. It does not add up.

  5. ha ha look at you lot thinking you know more than the club itself, im pretty sure they have ran it by the fa, and why would the premier league ever have to release a statement, the club are fully aware of wats happening and do not need a public statement to know whether 1 of their players are suspended or not. crazy!

  6. hoe…….his suspension was lifted sat eve due to newcastle game (free for sunday)eventhough the paperwork had gone through on his signing and was a spurs player friday…..if the newcastle game had not been played he would still be unable to play until after newcastle next game..

    so it seems

  7. What would have happened if Newcastle had gone bust at the end of last season – Would he have been suspended forever – never to kick a ball again?

  8. billospur if that is the case, surely he was our player as of Friday so then Saturdays game he was no longer playing for Newcastle so this wouldn’t count?

  9. Under: FA DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES

    6. PUNISHMENTS – Relating to First Team Competitive Matches

    (c) PLAYERS SENT OFF UNDER LAW 12 (4) and (5)
A Player who is dismissed from the Field of Play for denying a goal or an obvious goalscoring
opportunity by physical means or by handling the ball, will be suspended
automatically from FTCM commencing forthwith, until such time as his Club has
    completed its next FTCM.

… So, for denial of goal scoring opportunity = 1 match.

    (g) Players dismissed from the Field of Play in a FTCM, having previously in the same
season been sent off in a FTCM (or suspended under the Standard Directions set out
in Schedule A in these Regulations for an incident in a FTCM), will be suspended for
one extra match for each such previous sending off or suspension, in addition to the
automatic suspension applicable to the dismissal.

… So, as he was sent off before in the season = 1 extra match.

FTCM = First Team Competitve Match

Newcastle United defender to serve suspension.

At a Regulatory Commission hearing today, a claim for wrongful dismissal by Newcastle
United defender Sebastien Bassong was rejected.

Bassong was sent off during Newcastle United’s Premier League match with Fulham on
Saturday 16 May for denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Bassong’s two match suspension, due to it being his second dismissal of the season,
