Spurs defender admits he has been used to being left out of the team

Kyle Walker-Peters is hopeful that he has shown enough in the last couple of matches to have impressed Ralph Hasenhuttl and keep his place in the Southampton side for the final six matches of the season.

Walker-Peters found himself on the bench with Yan Vallery getting the nod to start ahead of the Tottenham academy graduate in Southampton’s first two matches since the restart.

However, the defender came on as a substitute at the start of the second half in the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal and put in an impressive display.

The 23-year-old earned Hasenhuttl’s praise for his performance against Spurs’ old enemy (Football.London) and was rewarded with a start in Saints’ 3-1 win over Watford on Sunday.

The right-back could reportedly be an important cog in Tottenham’s transfer wheel this summer, with the club said to be hoping he can be used to reduce Southampton’s asking price for midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojberg (Football.London’s Alasdair Gold).

Walker-Peters insisted that he was not faced by being left on the bench by Hasenhuttl and hoped that he has done enough to be a starter for the club after admitting that he has become accustomed to being left out of the starting eleven in North London.

He told The Daily Echo: “I was used to it at Tottenham (being left out of the team).

“I know what I need to do to get into a team and sometimes that means being patient.

“I was the new boy here and I was still learning the style of play that the gaffer wants from us, but I stayed patient and stayed calm.

“When you get your opportunity you just have to take it and hopefully the manager thinks I’ve done that.

“I’m going to do all I can to stay fit and when the manager gives me an opportunity I’ll give my best.

“I want to try and win as many games as possible.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Irrespective of how he performs during his loan spell at the St Mary’s, I believe Jose has already made his mind up about Walker-Peters. I expect the club to sell him this summer. He could end up being crucial in helping us land Hojbjerg.
