Spurs defender laughed at by crowd for trying audacious ‘Zidane’ skill

The Irish Times have revealed Matt Doherty’s attempts at a Zinedine Zidane-esque pirouette drew a chuckle from the home crowd in Dublin on Tuesday.

Doherty remarked last week, ahead of the Republic of Ireland’s Nations League clashes against Scotland and Armenia, that he might be back in contention to start for Spurs after getting some matches under his belt during the international break (The Irish Mirror).

The Spurs star was given the nod to start both matches but he did not cover himself in glory in the 2-1 defeat against the Scotts, with The Irish Times slamming him for an ‘erratic’ display.

Doherty got 90 minutes under his belt against Armenia and put in a much more accomplished performance, with the same publication praising the Tottenham man, and awarding him a rating of 7 out of 10.

However, the report revealed that the 30-year-old’s attempt at an audacious piece of skill did draw laughs at the Aviva Stadium.

They wrote about Doherty’s performance on Tuesday: ‘Willing and incisive down the right, his scheming bought the corner for Egan’s goal.

‘Tried a little Zidane pirouette on the edge of the Armenian box just before the break that tickled the crowd. Shocking goatee, all the same.’

Getting a couple of games under his belt will have done wonders for Doherty’s match fitness and confidence. Hopefully, it is not long before we see the former Wolves man being given the nod to start by Antonio Conte, with matches now coming thick and fast.
