Spurs defender opens up on Bayern humiliation

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has become the latest player to weigh in on how the 7-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich and the mood inside the Spurs dressing room after the result.

The Spurs defence certainly didn’t cover themselves in glory in the second half against Bayern with the Belgian being as culpable as any player for the home side’s late capitulation.

The 32-year-old has opened up on how painful the result was to take and insisted that the players let the fans down on Tuesday.

The Straits Times and Football.London quotes Vertonghen as saying, “It was a painful night for us. They punished us with every single mistake we made and we let the fans and everyone at the club down with this result.”

When asked about the mood inside the dressing room after the defeat, the centre back said, “Bad. Everyone is ashamed of this result. There’s not too much I can say about this.

“I think everyone will have a bad night’s sleep and probably a couple about this.”

However, the former Ajax man stressed the importance of turning the results around as quickly as possible and assured the fans that the players were willing to put in the hard work needed to improve.

Vertonghen added, “It is up to us to try to change it as quickly as possible. This is part of football, sometimes you are on the good side, sometimes you are on the bad side. We have to be men and take responsibility to try to change this as quickly as possible.

“We work hard and the only way up is to work hard and try to improve. Of course, the fans are disappointed, we are as well.”

Tottenham travel to the Amex Stadium to take on Brighton later today in what now feels like a must-win game for Pochettino’s men.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is good to see that all the players are reiterating the need to work hard and bounce back from the result, which seems to indicate that we might see a response from the side against Brighton today. Hopefully, the players will be able to restore their confidence by picking up their first away win of the season.
