Spurs defender reveals he held discussions with Poch regarding a position change

Tottenham defender Juan Foyth found playing time hard to come by in his first season with the club after moving to North London in the summer of 2017.

However, the 21-year-old got more time last season and impressed in many of his outings. According to Transfermarket.com, Foyth featured 17 times for Spurs last season with 12 of those appearances coming in the Premier League.

Apart from playing in his natural centre half position, the Argentine also played as a right full back, and showed that he has the attributes to be valuable both while going forward and while defending.

The young defender has now revealed that it was Pochettino’s idea to try him out at full back, something that the Estudiantes man was more than happy to do.

Speaking to Cielo Sports, Foyth said, “That I’m playing as a full-back is all down to him. One day, we were doing laps around the field and he called me over to talk and asked me if I would feel comfortable playing there.

“Obviously, I wanted to play and knowing that I could do it well, I said yes. I felt really good in the games I played.”

Since then the Spurs defender has also featured for Argentina at right back in several of their Copa Ameria games this summer, and displayed impressive composure in those games.

The youngster revealed that he will have another conversation with Pochettino regarding his position when he returns to the club for pre season.

He added, “Over the past two years, I’ve learned a huge amount of things with him and with his staff. When I return, the first thing I’ll do is go to his office and talk with him.”

Given how good he is one the ball, Foyth certainly has the ability to play further forward up the pitch. It will be interesting to see if Pochettino continues persisting with him at full back next season or if he allows the defender to concentrate on the centre half position.
