Spurs Discover League Cup Opponent

Tottenham Hotspur are set for a Wembley date with Championship side Barnsley in the 3rd round of the League Cup, after the Tykes left it late to beat Derby County 3-2 in last night’s decisive 2nd-round encounter.

Spurs knew they were to eventually face either Barnsley or Derby County, but had to wait until Tuesday night to discover the outcome due to Derby County’s 1st-round game against Grimsby having being abandoned as a result of heavy rainfall.

Barnsley fought back from 2-1 down to beat Derby last night, with the winning goal coming in the 88th minute from second-half substitute Adam Hammill.

Their prize is a trip to Wembley stadium on September 17th where the South Yorkshire side will test their luck against Premier League title hopefuls Tottenham.

Spurs haven’t fared well in the League Cup since their 2-0 final defeat to London rivals Chelsea in 2015, having been knocked out of the third and fourth round in their previous two campaigns.

Tottenham’s last trophy came in this very competition back in 2008, a feat Spurs will likely try to repeat given the increased pressure on Pochettino’s young guns to start delivering silverware.
