According to journalist James Nursey, Tottenham Hotspur are set to take advantage of Blackburn Rovers’ financial issues and make promising young centre-half Ashley Phillips their next signing of the summer.
Tottenham’s defensive issues are well-documented, and after conceding 63 goals in the Premier League last season, changes are much-needed for the North London club.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has already made it clear to the club’s board that he needs to sign a new centre-back this summer (90 Min).
While names such as Micky van de Ven (Football Insider), Edmond Tapsoba (Football.London), and Victor Nelsson (Sabah) have all been linked with Spurs as ready-made reinforcements, Spurs are yet to add to their backline this summer.
Most Spurs fans will be hoping for a centre-back who can slot straight into the first team, but the club may have one eye on the future, too, as interest could be rekindled in Blackburn’s Ashley Phillips, a player Tottenham were looking at last year (Daily Mail).
Ashley Phillips could join Spurs on pre-season tour
Now, Daily Mirror journalist James Nursey has taken to Twitter to share a bold claim about Phillips’ future, suggesting the player will sign for Spurs this week and meet up with the squad for the remainder of the pre-season tour.
Nursey claimed Blackburn Rovers‘ owners are making big financial cuts and “sanctioning player sales,” which has seemingly alerted Tottenham Hotspur.
Nursey said: “Spurs are set to capitalise on Blackburn’s financial cutbacks with a deal for Ashley Phillips, which should be finalised tomorrow. The starlet will then travel to Asia immediately to be with their first team.”

It will be interesting to see if this deal does come to fruition, and as quickly as Nursey says, too. If we do sign Phillips, he will be a great addition to our development squad and could be nurtured into a top talent for the future.
