Spurs face battle to sign long-term transfer target

Tottenham Hotspur face competition from Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes.

Spurs have been linked with the 24-year-old for the last few transfer windows but a deal has always failed to materialise, with West Ham United also keen on the player.

Gomes hasn’t had the best of times since moving to Catalonia for €35m from Valencia in 2016 and is expected to head out of the exit this summer.

Gomes was left out of Portugal’s World Cup squad

The Portuguese international’s lack of regular first-team club football cost him a place in their World Cup squad and instead has to watch on from home after previously helping his nation to Euro 2016 glory.

He started just six times in La Liga last season, has privately accepted he has no future at the club under Ernesto Valverde and has reportedly cleared out his belongings at the club’s Ciutat Esportiva training facilities.

With Mousa Dembele’s future in Tottenham looking ever increasingly in doubt, a move for Gomes could finally happen with Barcelona said to be looking for around £30 million to part with the player.
